Three Injured In Morning Fire

By Jason Linetsky

Photos by Lloyd Mitchell Photos by Lloyd Mitchell Engine Company 323 and Ladder Company 159 responded to a fire last Thursday around 10 a.m. as smoke billowed out of the first floor of 1247 East 59th Street, between Avenues L and M. Approximately 60 firefighters brought the all-hands blaze under control within 30 minutes. However, access to water was hampered by a frozen fire hydrant. Three minor injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

This is just one of a slew of fires for the start of 2018, including one that burned an attic and part of a roof on East 88th Street between Flatlands Avenue and Avenue J and, more recently, destroyed an abandoned car wash on Utica Avenue and Farragut Road on January 13th (see “Fire Guts Abandoned Business,” page 3).
