Every precinct, including Housing and Transit, chose community representatives to participate in the 10-week program, which was a truncated version of the same training NYPD cadets receive. Students came from a diverse list of backgrounds, such as clergy, community council members, business owners, tenant association chairs and community activists.

Over the course of the program, speakers from each division of the police department explained how they perform their duties, how officers handle a wide range of situations, the laws of NYC and the limits of officer jurisdiction, as well as answering many questions. For students to really understand the mindset of officers, trainers also brought in simulators and conducted role-playing activities.

Graduates Linetsky and Hattie Hightower, president of the Glenwood Houses Tenants Association. Commissioner James O’Neill and other high-ranking officials of the NYPD congratulated the students and presented them with certificates and pins indicating their completion of the program.

Local community representatives included Glenwood Houses Tenants Association President Hattie Hightower, AmeriCORPS VISTA Community Organizer Ivie Bien-Aime, Purpose Life Church Senior Pastor Heston Williams and the Canarsie Courier’s own Jason Linetsky, who is also corresponding secretary for the 63rd Precinct.
