Rosh Hashanah Celebrated With Help From JCCC

By Linda Steinmuller

Thanks to the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie (JCCC), area residents have all the ingredients necessary for the Jewish New Year. Last week, the JCCC held their annual Food Bank at their Starrett City offices, located at 1170 Pennsylvania Avenue, where they distributed 1,320 meals for the area’s elderly and needy. Rabbi Avrohom Hecht, Executive Director of JCCC, said, “We dip apples in honey on Rosh Hashanah in hopes of a sweet year and drink grape juice for a blessing.” Food boxes also contained matzoh ball mix, fresh produce, rice, macaroni, raisins and cranberry sauce. The rabbi said, “We need to address the root causes of poverty and hunger and uplift the needy. We’re happy that we’re able to do as much as we can to make a difference in people’s lives.” He thanked Councilman Alan Maisel, the UJA-Federation, Met Council and City Harvest for their assistance in making the donations possible. He also offered a special thanks to his volunteers. “Some of our volunteers work 20 hours per week. Many of them are immigrants and are so appreciative of America. They’re proud of their new home and want to give back to others,” Hecht said.
