Bildersee Students Get Free Computers To Take Home

CFY instructor (center) shows I.S. 68 sixth grader and her mother what the free computer is capable of doing at training seminar last Saturday. Thanks to a national non-profit program, almost 200 Isaac Bildersee Intermediate School students are getting free computers to take home.

I.S. 68 was recently selected to participate in Computers for Youth (CFY) — New York City’s Take IT Home program, which gives students a free home learning center, that includes a computer loaded with educational software.

Due to the large number of students eligible for the computers, the initial training session was held at I.S. 68 last Saturday as the CFY staff spent the entire day in four separate sessions to train parents and their children everything they needed to know about their new computers. An additional session will be held this Saturday to complete the distribution of the computers to seven classes (161, 162, 163, 176, 265, 276 and 277) of sixth graders.

Free home learning center includes computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse and surge protector. CFY’s “Take IT Home” program is designed to improve children’s learning environment at home and to strengthen the school-home connection. The program is structured to accomplish three goals:

•Enhance the educational resources in children’s homes by offering a free Home Learning Center. Participating families get to keep this computer upon completion of it’s Family Learning Workshop.

•Improve parent-child interaction around learning at home

•Help teachers contribute to and take advantage of a stronger school-home connection

The entry point for the program is the sixth grade because educators believe that is the pivotal year in which (a) children begin to disengage from academics, (b) parents begin to feel less capable of helping with increasingly complex homework assignments, and (c) academic achievement begins to decline.
