I.S. 68 After School Program Spotlighted At Concert & Rally

In conjunction with thousands of events nationwide, Isaac Bildersee I.S. 68 showcased its agenda with a "Lights On After School" concert and basketball tournament last Thursday evening in support of its Out of School (OST) afterschool programs.

The seventh annual "Lights On After School" event, which is in its second year at I.S. 68 and serves over 300 children, was organized by the non-profit After School Alliance to spread public awareness and advocacy to ensure that all children have access to afterschool programs by 2010.

The Bildersee event, which took place in the East 82nd Street school's auditorium and gymnasium, included skits, musical performances and a basketball tournament to showcase some of the activities students participate in when the school day is over. Among the performances were limbo dancers, calypso babies, native-costumed African dancers, hip hop/ballet dancers and the Half Moon singers. Site directors were Marie Joseph and Leslie Brooks, while the OST director was Stuart Boucaud.

Overall, the event emphasized three significant contributions of afterschool programs: keeping kids safe and healthy in a supportive environment, inspiring them to learn and be creative and relieving parental worries about their children's afternoon activities.
